Asbestos is a term for a group of minerals made of microscopic fibres. They can damage your lungs if you breathe these fibres in. Way before its dangers were known, asbestos was regularly used in buildings as insulation, flooring and roofing and even sprayed on ceilings and walls. It is currently banned in the United Kingdom.
Buildings constructed before the year 2000, however, may still have asbestos in them. If these materials are damaged or disturbed asbestos fibres can be released into the air causing danger to those nearby.
